As summer officially begins mid-July here in Aomori Prefecture -- located in Tohoku, the most northern region on the mainland of Japan -- it is finally the time to shake off the spring chill as we enter into August’s hot and humid temperatures. Where do the locals recommend you visit? The Oirase Gorge of course!

If you have visited Sapporo for any length of time you will certainly have seen Mt. Moiwa, and you may even have taken the cable car to its top. It is a beautiful destination where couples enjoy the sunset or groups of tourists take a thousand photos of the view. But that is not how you “do” a mountain. You climb it. Properly. With good shoes. And with sweat in your eyes. It’s the journey, not the destination.

Many of these temples have magnificent gardens in their precincts that are sanctuaries of peace and tranquillity from all the crowds and noise of the big cities in Japan. In this article, I will highlight some of the less well-known temple gardens in Nara that offer you a chance to experience this peace and tranquillity for yourself.

The steep hill should not discourage you from climbing further ahead, as the best part of Hiraizumi awaits at the top of the hill in Chuson-ji. The beauty of multiple pagodas built in a form of a “Buddhist Pure Land” is just the beginning. The highlight is, of course, saved at the very end: the Golden Hall.

Cape Hedo is the Northernmost point of Okinawa, Japans Southernmost prefecture. It resides in the village of Kunigami Village, and overlooks both the South China sea to the West, and the Pacific ocean to the East. It’s a great vantage point for being where these two bodies of water collide in a harmony of azures and beryl.

Looking out over Tokyo from one of the many observation decks, it might seem like there is no end to the urban landscape. One skyscraper after another, it can seem like a long journey must be undertaken just to escape the hustle and bustle and find some greenery. Thankfully (for any nature or hiking lovers), Chiba prefecture is surprisingly easy to get to, and offers a lush green panorama very much contrasting that of downtown Tokyo.

I met my first stray cat when I went jogging in Japan. There are many domestic cats walking around (so far I have never seen a stray dog here), but strays always look different and give me different looks. That skinny cat I met had white fur, with lots of dirty stains and even some blood ones. Luckily, I could see him/her again when I went to the same spot again.

Air BnB is a wonderful thing. It’s added a completely different dimension to holiday accommodation. I’m a big fan. You can find all manner of weird and wonderful places, all over the world, and quite often for a lot less than a hotel. This in mind, a Buddhist temple probably still wouldn’t figure in your top 5 of places you can find on Air BnB (it sure wasn’t on mine), but here we are. Allow me to tell you the story of when I stayed at just such a place.

Home to an active volcano, stunning black sand beaches and a mystical volcanic ash field, Oshima is an unforgettable destination. Compared to the urban maze of people that is Tokyo, this island is almost alien in its indifference. Briefly known as 'Suicide Island' in the 1940s because of the high number of couples who took their lives by jumping into the volcanic crater below, Oshima has a strange reputation in popular culture.

Who doesn’t know about Lakes Kawaguchi and Saiko? Apparently anyone outside Japan. Famous lakes in Yamanashi prefecture, which have always been locations for tourists to take a photo with the beautiful Mount Fuji in the background.

My lungs thanked me as fresh air flooded my insides. Sun rays caressed my face, and droplets of water sprayed my hair as my head strained to glimpse Sakushima. The ferry ride was approximately 25 minutes long, from Isshiki Ferry Port.

To be honest, I didn’t like Maruyama Zoo when I first went there about 15 years ago. The enclosures were small and made of concrete and the animals seemed unhappy. But the zoo has changed and is still changing. There has been a large amount of construction work to enlarge the animal's space and to improve the viewing experience.

When I moved to Beppu, the first thing I was looking for was a sea-beach. Whenever I felt like walking with nature, I always preferred a beach. So, when I saw the Mochigahama beach, I was really amazed by its beauty.
