Area: Kyushu
Kyushu is the southernmost of Japan's main four islands. The Kyushu region includes eight prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Oita, Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Okinawa. The area partly enjoys a sub-tropical climate.

Today there are many activities you can do at the popular tourist destination. You can rent some kimono and amble through the historic quarter in traditional costume. You can take a ride on a rickshaw. You can eat sweets at one of many vendors on Yunohira Kaido Street. You can have your photo taken with an owl on your arm at the Owl Zoo. But to me, the true charm of Yufuin had always been the tranquility.

Nagasaki is a fascinating prefecture with a long and colourful history. It was the first part of Japan where foreign explorers were allowed to trade with and has thus been a testing ground for the future of the country.

Like almost every other city in Japan, Kagoshima was carpet bombed during World War II, and little remains of its historic buildings. The entry point of modern Kagoshima is Kagoshima station, whose distinction is that it is the southernmost terminal of the Shinkansen line, and the building houses an IMAX theater and a Ferris wheel.

Like most of the sightseeing places in Kagoshima, Tenmonkan can be reached by the tram. There is so much to see, eat and shop that it is always a great place to come back to. Here are five things to do at Tenmonkan, you don't want to miss.

The place is called Kabeyu Onsen. I had to drive through continuous mountains in the western part of Oita Prefecture to get there. Kabeyu Onsen is located on a wider road, though the bath itself is located a bit below, next to a river.

Fujisaki Hachimangu is probably the most important shrine in Kumamoto and has a long rich history. It is closely linked to famous Japanese samurai such as Kato Kiyomasa and the Hosokawa family. In Autumn, the shrine is host to a fantastic four-day festival ending on Sunday with a horse parade through the city.

In Canal City shopping centre in Fukuoka, for just 980 yen you can eat gold, and ice cream at the same time. This is definitely the fanciest and most wonderfully wasteful ice cream around.

Before sugar was first imported, Japanese sweets relied on fruits and vegetables with a natural sweetness. Sweet potatoes and sweet bean paste were the best Japan had to offer — then suddenly, Japan was introduced to cake.

Even today, Beppu accounts for at least one tenths of Japan’s onsen production by volume. But although the place is a famous among the Japanese, and an increasingly popular destination for Korean and Chinese tourists, it is still relatively unknown to Western tourists in spite of its long history.

You can enjoy the many hot springs (温泉 or onsen), some are even outside (called rotenburo 露天風呂), just by the river. You can walk around the town, which is very picturesque, and try delicious food.

The highlight of the festival are the huge floats, made using traditional materials and methods (like wood, washi paper, clay, lacquer and gilding) and each one has its own story. They range from colourful fish, to lions and dragons. At night they will have lanterns hanging from them...

Japan has many different ways to travel cross-country. When all has been said about the common methods–bullet train, airplane, and bus–what is it like driving by automobile? This experience made me see a different side of Japan from behind the wheel.

A lot of people flock to Tokyo or any of the other more well known touristy places when they plan a visit to Japan but there’s a city that a lot of tourists have yet to really explore but really should--and that is Kitakyushu City.
