Akihabara is a mecca of pop culture. Whilst also known for its range of shops selling electronical items, this seems to have been overshadowed in recent times by the growing 'Otaku' (diehard fan) culture.

The winter is generally a hibernation period for what is one of the great joys of living in Japan; festival-going. Hibiya Park in Tokyo’s Chiyoda-ku held the Japan Fisherman’s festival over the weekend (February 3-6), and gave us a literal taste of what’s to come over the next six months or so.

Five times a year, 280 antique dealers from all over the country gather at the Ryutsu Center in Tokyo for the Heiwajima Antique Fair. From Friday to Sunday the second floor of the Ryutsu Center is packed with treasures from the past.

Somewhere between the Meiji chocolate bars and the Valentines appropriate heart-shaped moulds, I found a treasure chest of Japanese special edition goodness.

You can get there by using train or bus to Ueno, and stop at Ueno-okachimachi or just Ueno. Underlined that this is not the Ueno Park, if you are apparently get lost to Ueno park just take a walk for 7 or 10 minutes to get to the Ameyoko-cho. From any gates you enter that market, Ameyoko with all the long alley of shops will welcome you.
