Mention Okinawa, and thoughts of blue skies, clear waters, and sandy beaches are likely to come to mind. Indeed, known as the Hawaii of Japan, Okinawa is an ideal location for the perfect beach getaway and allows the water sport enthusiasts to try out activities like diving and snorkeling. A trip to Okinawa therefore would not be complete without visiting one of its beautiful beaches.

You have to go to Tokyo. But while you’re up that way it would be rude to ignore Kanagawa, the prefecture that sits underneath Tokyo and borders Shizuoka. Here is a 3-day itinerary to Kanagawa.

Red and pink poppies swayed gently in the breeze for as far as I could see. The bright crimson against the brilliant green stems and leaves were a stunning sight. This alone made the visit worthwhile.

The vast majority of visitors who have booked a short getaway by the beach will end up staying in one of the hotels located in Onna village. This is a fairly small and narrow area stretching about 26 kilometers between Nago to the north and the rural but large Yomitan village to the south.

The neighbouring Kanagawa prefecture offers an abundance of hiking trails for Tokyoites seeking escape. This past weekend, I opted for a quiet hike in the western part of the prefecture: Mount Ono.

After moving to Tokyo and experiencing the hustle and bustle of Akihabara, Shinjuku, and Harajuku I was searching for a place to escape the crowded and fast-paced streets. I wanted to see a different side of Japan. A more quiet and peaceful part of the country. When I asked a Japanese friend, he suggested going to Niijima, a small island off of the coast of Izu.

An amazing view, sharp and steep cliffs, deep blue waters and the horizon to gaze at. Cape Zanpa never disappoints in beauty and majesty. Cape Zanpa (often referred to as, Zampa) is located in the West of Okinawa Honto, in the village of Yomitan. The drive to Zanpa alone is worth the trip.

The ocean is both terrifying and fascinating to me, a home to some of my absolute favourite creatures: cetaceans. Cetaceans are whales and dolphins. If, like me, you prefer to see them in their rightful place (the ocean), then you’re in luck if you happen to be in Okinawa between January to April.
