Once you arrive you have to travel up the longest escalator I’ve seen in Japan to get to the base. There are also stairs but I wouldn’t advise it. Especially if you’ve just cycled up with a three-year-old.

Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Japan. About 20km from Wakkanai, in the Sea of Japan lies two small islands separated by a distance of 8km. Even relatively close, these two islands are drastically different from one another. If you are driving towards Wakkanai on the route 106 which runs along the Sea of Japan coast, you can enjoy a remarkable cone shaped volcano rising from the ocean.

If you have visited Sapporo for any length of time you will certainly have seen Mt. Moiwa, and you may even have taken the cable car to its top. It is a beautiful destination where couples enjoy the sunset or groups of tourists take a thousand photos of the view. But that is not how you “do” a mountain. You climb it. Properly. With good shoes. And with sweat in your eyes. It’s the journey, not the destination.

The Clock Tower in Sapporo was built in 1878 and is the oldest building in Sapporo. It is a very popular site for tourists to visit and is the symbol for Sapporo and for Hokkaido. The star on its tower can be seen on many Hokkaido products.
