At first glance one may not recognize the historical significance of this location. However, upon observing the rectangular formation of neatly placed stones at the peak of Kōbōyama, one may recognize its tumulus-like features. And, one would be right to. Kōbōyama is in fact a tumulus, or burial mound.

Here in Japan, Chinese restaurants usually do not have an exact highlighted dish unlike specialty restaurants such as a soba or curry restaurant. But they would most likely serve set meals (teishoku) and ramen. Let me share my three favorite Chinese restaurants in the neighbourhood of Minami Uonuma.

Izu Peninsula is a relatively small landmass that juts out into the Pacific. It is a spectacularly beautiful and incredibly rugged landscape. Due to its tumultuous formation the area is rife with hot springs and a lot of rock formations. The coastline is covered in rock outcroppings, some are hundreds of meters tall, while others are much shorter. Some of the best rock in Izu Peninsula though can be found at Jogasaki, and because of this rock climbers flock from around the country to climb here.

If you have time in Nagoya, that big and under-appreciated metropolis on the Tokaido shinkansen line, you can use the opportunity to do a quick jaunt up to Inuyama Castle (犬山城, Inuyamajō), the smallest (and supposedly oldest) original castle of them all.

When I moved to Nagoya, Japan I didn’t expect to have much to do. It’s a big city, sure. But compared to party towns like Osaka and Tokyo there’s not a lot. Luckily for me, I moved into a share house that used to be a hotel, which includes twenty natives.
