It seems like the rainy season only lasted a few days this time around. The stifling heat and humidity of summer already seem to be upon us. An escape is probably the best course of action, but where can one escape to?

Air BnB is a wonderful thing. It’s added a completely different dimension to holiday accommodation. I’m a big fan. You can find all manner of weird and wonderful places, all over the world, and quite often for a lot less than a hotel. This in mind, a Buddhist temple probably still wouldn’t figure in your top 5 of places you can find on Air BnB (it sure wasn’t on mine), but here we are. Allow me to tell you the story of when I stayed at just such a place.

A popular Japanese food, Ramen, is found in shops at every street corner in Japan. Mostly ramen is prepared in a broth that uses pork meat and broth from it, while in some shops chicken is often used. For Muslim tourists in Japan it is most unlikely to experience the flavours of a bowl of conventional Japanese ramen. Narita-ya and Ayam-ya are two Japanese halal ramen restaurants that serve delicious bowls of ramen, worth a try.

In November 2015, I visited Kyoto to meet up with a friend who was now living in Shiga. She and I decided to try one of the many Maiko Makeover experiences on offer; after all, it's a once in a lifetime thing that you can only do in Japan.

Like many art forms, wagashi making is an effort of practice and instructions, two things you can experience yourself in some of Japan’s most renowned wagashi shops. In Kyoto you have the chance to do make tradition with your own hands at Kanshundo Honten.

As these sunnier times come into focus and the deluge of the mid-June rainy season subsides, we are once again left to ponder how best to enjoy the rather clement weather while it is still here. For many people in Osaka, it comes down to one of 3 choices: the beach, the beer garden or the barbecue.

Japan, the dream travelling destination for so many, has a very small percentage of Muslim residents, mostly students or workers from Muslim countries. Nevertheless, the number of Muslim tourists, especially from neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia, has been increasing yearly, making it necessary for Japan to accommodate the basic needs of these tourists.

It may only be the end of June as I write this, but already, rainy season is ending, the sun is shining, the skies are blue and the beer gardens are calling to me. Yes, dear readers and friends, summer is here in Osaka.

Japan is famous for its food. It was even recognized as the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. Yet, when it comes to vegetarian, options can seem rather scarce. Recently we visited Kyoto and Osaka for sightseeing and had to find something we could eat, both meat-free and delicious.
