The Clock Tower in Sapporo was built in 1878 and is the oldest building in Sapporo. It is a very popular site for tourists to visit and is the symbol for Sapporo and for Hokkaido. The star on its tower can be seen on many Hokkaido products.

Japan is an East Asian country that has their unique tradition and lifestyle. Coming to Japan from a Western country might make you think you will not see a lot of western influence here. If you love classical music and used to watch performances back home, worry not. In Sapporo you can enjoy watching live classic music regularly being held in Sapporo “Kitara” Concert Hall. It is located in the Chuo ward area of Sapporo, in the famous Nakajima Park.

To be honest, I didn’t like Maruyama Zoo when I first went there about 15 years ago. The enclosures were small and made of concrete and the animals seemed unhappy. But the zoo has changed and is still changing. There has been a large amount of construction work to enlarge the animal's space and to improve the viewing experience.

The town of Furano has a rather unlikely local dish. It doesn’t use special ingredients found only in the wilds of Central Hokkaido. In fact, it doesn’t use many ingredients that are considered typically Japanese. It uses eggs and a sauce that will always have well-guarded secret ingredients. The local dish of Furano is called omucurry, short for omelette curry (Japanese language often uses portmanteaus especially for English words), and you can find it in dozens of restaurants.

If you go to Sapporo, never skip this beautiful port city. Otaru, situated in the western part of Hokkaido, the city has developed and prospered as "the sea entrance of Hokkaido" over the last 100 years and it has gained the nickname "Wall Street of the North".

Fried chicken by any other name would taste as sweet … is not true. If you spend any amount of time in Japan, you will soon realize that different areas have different dialects and different words for things. Sometimes there is simply a different word for the same thing: kawaii (cute) in the rest of Japan is menkoi in Hokkaido, while sometimes the thing itself has changed. Fried chicken in Japanese is karaage whereas in Hokkaido it is called zangi.

Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park located in Takino Hills just to the south of Sapporo, is one of the most beautiful parks in Hokkaido. The picturesque way to getting here is amazing too, with many hills and trees all along.

You might not know it but New Chitose Airport is Japan’s third busiest airport after Narita and Hanada. Also, the Chitose Tokyo leg is one of the busiest routes in the world with about 9 million people a year using it. If you happen to have to change planes here or if you have some time to kill before your flight, there is actually quite a lot to do. I hope to show you a few of them.

Sensei Awesome, which is the nickname we have given my daughter’s teacher, invited the parents to come for a day of udon noodle making at school. Kids and their parents were given the opportunity to make hand-made udon noodles and they were fabulous!

This small, yet fun aquarium has playful seals and otters, lets you see how much energy an electric eel carries, and also a good collection of fossils.

In Furano, bike riding is a fantastic way to explore and has a good value at 200 yen per hour. Because Furano has rich and delicious food at many attractions, bike riding is also a good way to sample local delights without adding to your waistline. In Japan, helmets are not compulsory for adults so if you prefer to wear one, bring it along.

If you are coming to Sapporo, you should not miss the opportunity to take a ride on the streetcar. Even if you are only going a few stops, or completing the entire loop, it is an unimaginable experience.

Hokkaido offers beautiful bushwalks and treks, but hikers beware. There are two dangerous creatures lurking in those forests. One is gigantic and the other is tiny and both are best avoided.

Lavender fields in Furano rival those of Provence in the South of France. The Japanese lavender growers in Central Hokkaido are just as creative in presenting new ways to enjoy it.

I started running about five years ago and I try to run most days. I have a number of routes around Sapporo that take me along rivers, through mountains, past temples and along busy main roads. However, this is Hokkaido, and it snows from December to March.

People in the town of Furano, located in the very centre of Hokkaido, know that when your snow is this good, your locals are this friendly, and your food is this delicious, you are bound to be discovered by foreigners.

One of the places in Japan that have many exciting attractions in winter is Sapporo. If you want to see a really big pile of snow just on the side of the main street, you can!! And because there is a lot of snow in Hokkaido, this is where you have the chance to see the biggest snow festival in Japan, Sapporo Snow Festival!
