Writer: Stephen Howes

Stephen is an Australian teacher living in Gunma prefecture with his family of five.  He spent almost eight years on his first adventure to Japan, from 2001-2008, before returning to Brisbane to pursue a position as a Science and Japanese teacher at a well-respected school.  This experience enriched his interest and curiosity in the history and language of Japan, which he will endeavour to share with readers.  His experiences, the second time around, can also be followed on on YouTube, or on Twitter.

The Charm of Kusatsu Onsen

The sulphurous, rotten egg smell synonymous with high school science experiments that smothers your face and clothes as soon as you open the door of your car. But don’t let that stop you from planning to go there. In fact, I’ve grown to love the smell. If you are after an authentic experience, I highly recommend Kusatsu onsen in Gunma prefecture, which is always ranked in the top ten among the Japanese.
