Trendy Cafes to Get Your Fix in Osaka

Trendy Cafes to Get Your Fix in Osaka

Ian Hamilton

Osaka has seen a number of coffee shops pop up and locals are flocking to venues that deliver good quality coffee. It is getting so good, you will even start to hesitate before settling for a coffee from a vending machine. The following cafes are a selection of unique venues that are perfect for meeting up with friends, taking Instagram photos, watching the world go by, or if you are just looking for your daily caffeine fix.

1. Brooklyn Roasters (Kitahama)

Overlooking the Central Public Hall and Nakanoshima Park, Brooklyn Roasters offers great views of the river. Its fit out includes an outdoor deck, leather couches, tables with bar stools, and a large communal bench. While you are ordering a coffee be sure to check out the exquisite floral arrangements prepared by the florist that shares the interior with the cafe.

If you like the vibe here, venture south to Namba to see their second shop which shares the seating with a great pizza joint (Token Pizza).

Nearest train stations: Kitahama, Yodayobashi and Naniwabashi

2. Mel's

Mel's, short for Melbourne, pays tribute to Australian coffee culture by fitting both coffee roasting and drink preparation inside a tiny corner store. The entire interior was constructed by the owners, who serve coffee with a smile here six days a week. Given the space constraints, they only do takeaway orders, however there are a couple of bench seats outside where you can watch Osaka locals go about their daily life. Even better, take your takeout coffee to one of the nearby parks.

Wifi: No

Nearest train stations: Nishi-Ohashi, Yotsubashi and Shinsaibashi

3. Saturdays Surfer NYC

Saturdays NYC is a well-known menswear brand, however their Osaka flagship store also features an amazing coffee shop on the ground floor. Their minimalist fit out features a long bench with bar stools and a polished concrete interior. Afterwards, head upstairs to check out Saturdays NYC's latest menswear offerings.

Near the heart of America-mura, Streamer Coffee Company is in the perfect rest spot during a busy day of shopping in Shinsaibashi. It is a wide space with plenty of comfortable seating. Conveniently, it opens at 8 AM and stays open until 10 PM (last order at 9:30 PM) and is a great place to watch people as they go shopping for clothes.

Nearest train stations: Yotsubashi, Shinsaibashi

5. Grandknot

An intimate space in the back streets of Kitahorie. Walking to the venue is half the experience – stroll down Orange Street, past the various boutique clothing shops, before heading north to reach Grandknot. Like the cosy streets of Kitahorie, the cafe interior is calming. Its large interior features polished concrete floors, light fixtures made out of copper piping and large communal tables. Order the drip coffee and watch the barista prepare your drink with typical Japanese care and precision.

Wifi: No (however there is free “15 minute” wifi within range)

Nearest train stations: Nishi-Ohashi, Yotsubashi

All these venues are centrally located and should keep you caffeinated as you explore Osaka. Consider hiring a bicycle to travel between these venues for the real Osakan experience.
