5 Cute Character Cafes in Tokyo You Won't Want to Miss
Tokyo is a bustling city full off cute cafés. However, especially when it comes to character cafés most of them are only time-limited and disappear again after just a few weeks. We took a closer look to the world of cute character cafés, so here is a list of five cafés staying permanently. Whenever you come to Tokyo you shouldn’t miss a visit there.
Let’s start up with the latest opened one: the Sanrio Café! This café is located at the entrance of Sunshine City in Ikebukuro and opened at the beginning of June 2020. Inside the café you can order a cute burger or pancake plates which are priced only 1,000 yen. Furthermore, they have character latte art drinks and smoothies.
For this restaurant you don’t need a reservation. However, if it is a busy time frame, they hand out time tickets with waiting numbers, so you can come back at a later time.
If you just would like to have something small, a take out is located right next to the café with crepes, donuts, ice cream and more.

A very popular place for Pokemon fans is the Pokemon Café in Nihonbashi. It is located on the same floor as the Pokemon Center DX inside Nihonbashi Takashimaya. Already opened in March 2018 it has a stable and a changing menu with time-limited offers, which makes it interesting to visit again and again. Next to the cute interior one of the highlights is the visit of a huge Pikachu or Eevee during your stay.
For the Pokemon Café a reservation is required. You can reserve your table on the official website, available in English, for free. If there are vacant seats, it is possible to enter the café without a reservation, too.

Back to the cute Sanrio characters, because we have a café only dedicated to the lovely yellow dog Pompompurin. There are actually three branch cafés and the one in Tokyo, opened in 2014, is located right in the middle of Takeshita Street in Harajuku. They offer a nice range of heartful and sweet dishes with cute Pompompurin designs and also have some sweet drinks. Sometimes collaborations are taking place, too.
You don’t need a reservation for the Pompompurin Café, but it might can come to longer waiting times especially on weekends and public holidays.

After its success as a time-limited café in 2018 the Kirby Café came back to Tokyo Skytree in December 2019 to stay permanently. The café menu is very cute combining Kirby and its friends and offering something for both: hearty food and sweets lovers. They have seasonal specials, so it is worth taking a look on their website before your visit. There is also an opportunity to celebrate your birthday at Kirby Café.

Such as the Pokemon Café a reservation is required and you can make it on the official website. However, if there are vacant or cancelled seats on the day, you can enter without a reservation.

Totoro Cream Puffs
Fans of Ghibli definitely shouldn’t miss a visit to Shirohige’s Cream Puff Factory in Setagaya, which opened at this location in 2013. It actually is a bakery, but it is also offering a café on the second floor to sit down and enjoy the cute Totoro-shaped cream puffs in a quite atmosphere. Next to two standard fillings (custard cream and chocolate cream) the cream filling is changing seasonally and are symbolized by lovely head decorations on the pastry.
A reservation for the café is not required, but you can make it by phone. If it is crowded, there might be some waiting time to enter.
