Cupcakes with Ears – Pikachu Sweets Shop in Ikebukuro
Last year in December a new attraction opened close to the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo that is situated in the shopping center Sunshine City in Ikebukuro. It is called Pikachu Sweets and is a sweet and confection shop that sells Pokémen themed sweets. It is mainly for take-out but there are a few tables provided. However, depending on how crowded the shop is, you might not be allowed to use them.
How To Get There?
The Sunshine City Shopping Center is about a 10-minute walk from the east exit of Ikebukuro Station. The shop is situated on the second floor on the opposite side of the Pokémon Center.
You might have to wait in line for a little while, but even on weekends, it doesn’t take too long.
Unlike at the Pokémon Cafés, a reservation is not required. The shop is open from 10 AM to 8 PM. Popular items might sell out so if you are having an eye on something, in particular, you might want to visit early.
The shop offers a variety of sweets and beverages. When I visited the shop in January, they offered Pikachu cupcakes, Pikachu pudding, ice cream and a pyramid catering set. In March, Eevee cupcakes were also added to the menu. As for drinks, you can get matcha cream tea, strawberry white chocolate au lait, café latte with Pokémon latte art, soda, and juice. All items are arranged and decorated in a very cute way.
Cupcakes are only sold in a set of two which cost 1,200 Yen. Most drinks are at around 600 Yen which is admittedly not a cheap price range, but slightly cheaper than the prices at the Pokémon Cafés. Besides the food and drinks, you can also purchase Pokémon-themed drink sleeves that are only available at the Pikachu Sweets shop.
When I visited the shop, I ordered a Pikachu cupcake and pudding set. The taste was ok but nothing too fancy. The cupcake was a little dry and the buttercream was very sweet. The Pikachu ears are made of banana chocolate.
The pudding tasted like normal custard pudding and comes in a small Pikachu glass that you can keep as a souvenir.
Should I Visit?
I can recommend a visit to the shop to everyone that likes Pokémon. Especially since you can combine it with a visit to the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo that most Pokémon fans probably have on their bucket list anyway. Of course, there are sweets shops all over Tokyo so, if you are looking for desserts with an exquisite taste you should try other sweet shops as well.
In comparison with the Pokémon Café, I personally like the Pokémon Café better in terms of how the food tastes. The Pokémon Café also offers additional entertainment value with the Pikachu greetings and you can sit down and enjoy your food.
At the moment the Pikachu Sweets shop is closed due to the state of emergency in Tokyo and will reopen once the emergency is lifted.
