Have a Holly Jolly BOOM! Christmas Firework Show in Beppu (Dec. 23 & 24)

Shy

Beppu is a beautiful town with a lot of great hot spring spots and is famous for its beach where visitors can relax on the warm sand. The mountains and the spas increase its beauty to a great extent. Every year the town holds a big Christmas fireworks show or hanabi during the Christmas break period at Beppu Beach Sand Bath. A lot of people from different regions come here just to see the fireworks at the sea beach.  Besides fireworks, the local people also sell snacks and foods in temporary stalls at the beach area which are really delicious and cheap. It is a huge festival with people singing, chatting, and smiling. Normally the fireworks takes place for 1 hour and it lasts from December 23 and 24. Hence the name, the Christmas Hanabi. How much fireworks go off in one hour? An AMAZING amount, that's how much!

It start at 8 PM and ends at 9 PM. Before the Hanabi starts, the organizer of the event holds a small cultural program. Artists from various cities come and perform at the event stage. They perform many romantic pop songs as most of the viewers of the event are romantic couples and teenagers. The romantic fireworks and Christmas songs sung by 1000 children will warm up your heart and will give you a feeling of joy. People of all ages come to see the event from various regions of Japan. They sit on the beach and enjoy the mind-blowing display of nearly 10,000 fireworks. Good Japanese and English songs are played on speakers when the Hanabi takes place and the light of the fireworks follows the music. It creates an awesome environment to watch the fireworks from the sea beach.

Another great part of the event is the temporary food stalls. The local people and few foreigners give temporary stalls of snacks and drinks in near the sea beach. The foods are really delicious and cheap. You can enjoy variety of food stands selling fugu (blowfish) rice porridge, Beppu's famous seafood, grilled corn on the cob, and many others. You can go with your family and friends and grab something to eat from the stalls and enjoy the fireworks while sitting at the beach. Due to the many international universities, Beppu is a great place where you will find many groups of international students. During the Christmas hanabi event, they also set up their own food stands with the food of their home country and will gladly offer you to taste the food of different regions. I always take dal-puri, a special Indian dish while enjoying the fireworks at the Sand Bath Beach. These students bring with them Indian, Bangladeshi, Indonesian, African, Vietnamese and Chinese food on those temporary food stands. This event brings everyone together to get to make new friends, eat great food, celebrate the holidays, all while you enjoy the fireworks.
