Mt. Eboshi was one of the most beautiful and also easiest hikes I have ever done. I would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. With amazing scenery and extraordinary foliage as an added bonus, this was an autumn experience one could only get in Japan.

This guide will cover going up the ridge path and down the slope back to the city with a distance of about 15km and an elevation gain of about 1100m. This is also the path I took for a one-day trip.

Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Japan. About 20km from Wakkanai, in the Sea of Japan lies two small islands separated by a distance of 8km. Even relatively close, these two islands are drastically different from one another. If you are driving towards Wakkanai on the route 106 which runs along the Sea of Japan coast, you can enjoy a remarkable cone shaped volcano rising from the ocean.

The steep hill should not discourage you from climbing further ahead, as the best part of Hiraizumi awaits at the top of the hill in Chuson-ji. The beauty of multiple pagodas built in a form of a “Buddhist Pure Land” is just the beginning. The highlight is, of course, saved at the very end: the Golden Hall.

Looking out over Tokyo from one of the many observation decks, it might seem like there is no end to the urban landscape. One skyscraper after another, it can seem like a long journey must be undertaken just to escape the hustle and bustle and find some greenery. Thankfully (for any nature or hiking lovers), Chiba prefecture is surprisingly easy to get to, and offers a lush green panorama very much contrasting that of downtown Tokyo.
