A region of hills and plains, the Chugoku area includes the prefectures of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori and Yamaguchi. The most famous city is Hiroshima.
Easily the most beautiful restaurant that I have visited in Japan so far is the Sanzoku restaurant in Iwakuni. The entire complex is owned by a family who bought it many years ago, and who turned the surrounding forest into a restaurant, a small temple, and the most delicious BBQ chicken that you can lay your hands on.

With the rainy season predicted to be over by the end of July, it’s time to start looking for a great beach in your area where you can relax and go for a swim. If you are in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, then Hagi’s Kikugahama Beach is definitely not something that you should miss!

The Sand Dunes in Tottori are breathtaking. Unfortunately, they are not located in the most accessible area. It is twenty minutes by train from Tottori City or three to five hours from Kyoto or Okayama depending on the road and the time of the year. It is, however, a gem which took the designated driver seven hours to drive to from Gifu city.

Okayama is a small city, a little off the beaten track. Overshadowed by its neighbors, Hiroshima and Kobe, it’s easily overlooked by travellers. It makes a fun day trip if you’re planning a visit to the Kansai or Chugoku area of mainland Japan.

Stunning scenery aside, the islands of Itsukushima and Ōkunoshima have one big thing in common – nobody has heard of them. Mention Itsukushima, famous for its iconic ‘floating’ orange torii (‘gate’), and you may well be faced with a blank look.

The raw crab legs sat on the mountain of crushed ice along with slices of fresh salmon and yellow tail. Dipping the crab sashimi in the soy sauce, it was soft, delicate yet bouncy. No wonder, it is a pride of Tottori prefecture.
