Sunsets alone along the Sea of Japan, or Nihonkai as it’s called in Japanese, make getting there well worth the effort, and the cycling and camping it offers make it more than well worth it.

After moving to Tokyo and experiencing the hustle and bustle of Akihabara, Shinjuku, and Harajuku I was searching for a place to escape the crowded and fast-paced streets. I wanted to see a different side of Japan. A more quiet and peaceful part of the country. When I asked a Japanese friend, he suggested going to Niijima, a small island off of the coast of Izu.

Travelling is as much about the experience as it is about the destination, but a great location can bring into blossom those joyous wild moments that you will treasure all your life. The young city of Minamiboso has such a place.

If you're on mainland Japan in July and August you can expect to see temperatures reach extremely humid highs of near 40 degrees Celsius (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit)! This fact alone can make a vacation very tough work for even the most seasoned of travelers. Cooler, quieter and full of surprises, a camping trip in the mountains is something worth considering.

If you go to Okinawa, chances are you're there to see more than just one island. If you're not willing to hop on a plane to Yonaguni or Ishigaki and are looking for something closer to base, why not check out Zamami-jima? This great little island, part of the Kerama-island group along with Aka and Geruma, is not only fantastic for water sports, but has masses of character to go along with it!

About half an hours` ferry ride away from Naha, Tokashiki Island, part of the Kerama Island group, is a convenient and fun choice for a day trip or maybe a couple of days away from the hubbub for those visiting Japan`s southern islands.
